COUNSELLING SERVICES

What is Counselling?

People come to counselling for many different reasons. There might be specific issues they may wish to explore, such as:

  • Low confidence
  • Unsatisfactory relationships
  • Low Mood/Depression
  • Distress following Abuse/Trauma
  • Stress/Anxiety/Bereavement
  • And many more not listed here

Sometimes people feel unfulfilled, but don’t exactly know the reason for their unhappiness or difficulties.

Counselling can help people understand themselves better. Your counsellor will help you make your own choices, and will treat you with respect and dignity.

Derby Women's Centre Counsellors

All Derby Women’s Centre Counsellors adhere to British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists, or United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy Code of Ethics, and are subject to the Professional Conduct Procedures therein.

Most of our counsellors are in training, and all our counsellors will have gained a minimum counselling certificate qualification before joining us.

How to get an appointment

You may telephone the office, or call in person to book an appointment for an initial assessment. During your initial assessment a qualified counsellor will spend 45mins talking to you to ensure counselling is the most suitable kind of help for your needs.

After your initial assessment your details will be passed on to a volunteer counsellor, who will contact you to arrange a mutually convenient appointment to begin your counselling.

You can find the contact details of Derby Women's Centre here.

Confidentiality

All things discussed in counselling shall remain confidential between counsellor and client. However there are some exceptions to the confidentiality rule, for example:

  • If you disclose information about current child abuse
  • If you disclose information about terrorism or drug trafficking

These will be fully explained to you at your first counselling session.

All counsellors are required to attend regular ongoing supervision where they discuss their client work in order to maintain ethical practice. All supervisors are bound by confidentiality too.

Donations

Donations made for counselling are very much appreciated, and we usually ask for a £5 donation towards the running of the service. However donations are not compulsory and it will not affect your counselling in any way if you are unable to give a donation.

Complaints

We would like you to tell us about anything you are unhappy with or think could be improved. Derby Women’s Centre has a complaints procedure. Please ask at DWC office.
